The dolphins that frequent Tin Can Bay, a popular tourist destination in Australia, are “missing” the humans who disappeared from the area during the quarantine because of the coronavirus. The animals, now solitary, are leaving “gifts” in the sand for the humans who used to interact with them and feed them.
The “gifts” are mostly sponges, plastic bottles covered with barnacles and fragments of coral, an environmental project volunteer told 7News.
“Nothing about dolphin behavior surprises me more,” commented Barry McGovern, who holds a master’s degree from the University of Queensland. “They do everything, they use tools, they have culture, they have something similar to names in whistle signatures,” added the dolphin expert.
